Frequently Asked Questions

Gabbert’s Auto welcomes the sale of a customer’s vehicle on consignment as long as the vehicle meets our standards and passes MS State Safety Inspection. We do not represent salvage title vehicles or vehicles that we do not feel are saleable on our premises. The details of our Consignment Sales Program are outlined below:

$299 Consignment Fee
A $299 Consignment Fee is due at the inception of a consignment sales agreement. This fee covers our active marketing of the vehicle for a period of three months (90 days). It includes photography of the vehicle, comprehensive internet listing of the vehicle on our web site as well as several other auto sales listings. It additionally includes weekly washing and vacuuming of the vehicle and keeping it in a presentable sales condition.

Pre-Owned Vehicle Check
It is in the best interest of all parties involved (seller, Gabbert’s and potential buyer) if a pre-owned vehicle checks is conducted before the vehicle is placed for sale. This check will determine any work that may be needed on the vehicle for state inspection, etc. and will help determine a fair selling price, but more importantly, avoid any surprises once the vehicle is sold.

Professional Detailing A Proven Help
Our experience has shown that a professional detailing will dramatically increase the sales potential of any vehicle and potentially command a higher selling price. Detailing is much more than a wash job; in addition to a waxed and buffed exterior, it will clean the engine bay, the trunk area, clean and wax the door jams and thoroughly clean the interior. You may have this done on your own, or we can do it for you in our Spa division. A Spa menu is available on this web site.

Commission Schedule
Consignment sales are subject to a sliding commission schedule which is below. Final sales settlement is subject to associated expenses such as overnight courier delivery of titles, loan pay-offs, etc. A copy of the final sale price will be given to the consignee after sale.

Insurance
It is the vehicle owner’s responsibility to maintain comprehensive insurance on the vehicle while in our possession. Liability and collision are covered by our insurance while the car is on test drives on our dealer plate.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Here are some frequently asked questions. If you have a different question, please feel free to call Gabbert’s, and ask for a car advisor.

What’s the first thing I need to do?
Call or come by and we will do an evaluation with you. We will consult many different sources and try to come to agreement on we think it will for and a price you are happy with. We like to do the evaluation to avoid any “pie in the sky” prices.

I’ve lost the title to my car…
If you have lost the title to your car, you will need to get a duplicate title. Gabbert’s can help you with this. It is important to apply for a lost title as soon as possible, because it can take several weeks or longer for a new title to be issued.

My name is not on the title. Can I still consign the car?
Yes, but Gabbert’s will ask to verify your relationship with the owner. As a rule, Gabbert’s will write the check only to the person named on the title. Call ahead if you want to consign a car owned by another person.

How does Gabbert’s determine the value of a car?
Although Gabbert’s policy is “You set the price” we have our own method of appraising cars. A careful vehicle inspection is the basis of any fair pricing. A vehicle that has been routinely serviced and cleaned will be worth considerably more than one that has been neglected. Various pricing and valuation sources are used to determine fair market value. These include Black Book, Blue Book, Kelly Blue Book, NADA and auction data.

My car is financed. Is that a problem?
It’s not a problem. You can still consign a car to Gabbert’s even if you are paying off a loan. It is important to provide a current statement of your account balance (payoff amount) when you bring your car in. If there is a deficient balance after the sale, you must be able to pay it off to get the title.

Why are Gabbert’s prices lower than other dealers?
Other used car dealers own their inventory, which means they face the risk of depreciation on inventory that does not sell. Most dealers have to pay interest on the inventory they have in stock. They also spend thousands of dollars a month in advertising and pay salespeople a commission. These factors contribute to higher costs, which the dealer passes on to the buyer. Gabbert’s system is completely different, allowing us to keep sticker prices thousands of dollars lower than other dealers.

What if my certificate of title says “Salvage” or TMU?
Gabbert’s will not consign or sell a vehicle with a “salvage” or “lemon” title. This is also known as a “branded title.” A title which has the letters “TMU” (True Mileage Unknown) cannot be consigned at Gabbert’s.

What happens if my car does not sell within 90 days?
Gabbert’s will call you to let you know the car has not sold. In some cases Gabbert’s will allow you to keep the car on our lot for free for an additional two weeks if you agree to reduce the price. But it depends on the vehicle, and the inventory. Gabbert’s will let you know.
